Aunt Polly, the Pie Queen of Ipswitch, has passed away. The pictures are delightful, and two little tree fairies follow along with you as the tree goes through its life cycle.
One Green Apple by Eve Bunting is a treat. Therefore, I recommend this story to children of all ages.
Share it with a friend! The story chronologically uses the letters A-Z in the alphabet to describe the situations in which the pie can be used. Pie is the perfect book for children and for people of all ages. My son loves this author, and I like how simple but informative this book is.
I urge teachers and homeschooling parents to check this out if you are doing any study about fruit, or apples. As soon as I read this my mind was racing with classroom activities!
The story follows the cycle of one apple from orchard, to market back to seed, tree and back into the hands of a child. Since each member of the family is using their apples for different purposes that fact is driven home.
For example, the letter M shows a young boy and girl happily munching on an apple pie. The story works backward from pie to the apples, the tree, the roots and more. With this being said, there is a great interplay between the text and the illustrations in this story.
The protagonist is Anna a little girl who works hard in the orchard along side her parents and grandparents. My son loved it. The alphabet is like a catchy song that kids can learn a great deal from, and this book can be used to teach a child this song as well.
The day is spent on a field trip to an orchard, where the children pick apples and make apple cider. I was expecting a basic book about picking apples at an orchard.
With each letter, there is an illustration displaying the content.
Your little reader will learn about the basics of what happens at an apple orchard, but you can take it further if you want. For example, I think that the author does a great job emphasizing every letter in the alphabet by starting each sentence on each sequential page with the next letter in the alphabet.
Since the pie is the main focus of the story, I again feel that it should be front and center in the illustrations as well. It is worth so much more than that. Polly was so loving to Alice. Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins is a simple but effective and delightfully bouncy countdown book.
The reader is taken through all the elements that go into making a pie, not the recipe though. From the bare branches of Winter to the pretty flowers in Spring we follow along not only with the tree but with a family of robins as they develop along with the fruit.
I also like how the author changes the font of the letter by bolding the letter, altering the color of the letter, and changing the font size of the letter that she is emphasizing at each point in the story. A book that can do that is a must have in my opinion.30+ books for an apple theme.
